New York has seen several basketball legends who began as second-round draft picks. Jalen Brunson recently celebrated with the Larry O’Brien Trophy in a parade, embodying the journey from second-round selection to NBA champion. Similarly, Willis Reed made history with the Knicks, leading them to their inaugural championship in 1970 after overcoming injury in a decisive Game 7.
During the NBA draft event in Brooklyn, hopes were high as teams aimed to secure future stars. The Knicks held the No. 31 pick, choosing Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton. However, Thornton’s rights were swiftly traded to the Houston Rockets. Despite the change, Thornton expressed excitement about joining the NBA, regardless of the team, particularly appreciating Texas’s lack of state tax.
The first round ended with Washington picking AJ Dybantsa, culminating on Tuesday night. The draft process now includes extensive trades, prompting a split over two nights for thorough evaluations. Duke’s Isaiah Evans experienced this firsthand, not returning to hear his name called until the second night as Minnesota’s pick at No. 33.
Meleek Thomas, who joined Cleveland after Sacramento selected him, praised John Calipari at Arkansas for teaching him patience. This trait proved vital in navigating NBA draft uncertainties. In contrast, Willis Reed was picked eighth in the 1964 draft, marking the first choice of the second round, and later led the Knicks to multiple championships.
In recent years, Jalen Brunson, chosen 33rd by the Dallas Mavericks in 2018’s second round, signed with the Knicks in 2022, sparking a franchise resurgence. German guard Jack Kayil expressed his eagerness to learn from Brunson after the Knicks acquired his rights with the No. 39 pick.
The Knicks also gained rights to Tyler Nickel, Vanderbilt’s No. 47 pick. Other notable second-round selections included Richie Saunders (No. 32 to Memphis), Braden Smith from Purdue (No. 38 to Indiana), and Emanuel Sharp at No. 45 to Sacramento, showcasing promising talent for the future of NBA.
