Democratic Establishment Prevails in Hawaii Primary

The Democratic establishment achieved a key victory in its ongoing internal conflict with progressive factions. On Saturday, longtime Representative Ed Case of Hawaii succeeded in his primary bid, defeating state Senator Jarrett Keohokalole, a progressive challenger.

Ed Case, who served in Congress from 2002 to 2007 and returned to office in 2018, faced significant competition this primary season. This race is part of a wider contest between establishment Democrats and progressive challengers, where several incumbents have been unseated by socialist candidates.

Senator Keohokalole, a state legislator since 2014, emerged as the most formidable contender against Case. Both candidates amassed substantial campaign funds; however, Case started with a financial advantage.

Keohokalole faulted Case for insufficient opposition to the Trump administration during its later term, specifically criticizing his stance on federal immigration actions under Trump’s lead.

Another point of contention was Case’s support for an early version of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in April 2025, which proposed federal voter ID and citizenship requirements. Although Case later opposed a revised edition that sought to increase federal control over state voter rolls, his initial support drew criticism.

Case asserted his independence, stating to Hawaii News Now, “I will never vote strictly along party lines. The concerns about noncitizen voting do not pertain to voter suppression, though I understand the fears involved.”

Keohokalole countered, claiming, “This is a solution in search of a problem. There are no security threats in our current electoral system.”

In the upcoming election, Case will compete against Republican candidate Adriel Lam. Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District, encompassing parts of Oahu including Honolulu, is considered a secure Democratic stronghold, with a Cook Political Report rating of D+13.
