Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., received confirmation from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred that San Francisco Giants players will not face discipline for writing Bible verses on their Pride Night caps. This development arose after the incident was deemed controversial.
Hawley expressed satisfaction with the response he received from Manfred. During his appearance on ‘The Will Cain Show’, he stated, ‘It looks like they’re admitting they’re wrong, which is exactly the case.’ According to Hawley, Manfred’s letter admitted that the warning to the players was unnecessary. The commissioner emphasized that players have the right to express their religious convictions and will not be punished for doing so.
Hawley further added, ‘I don’t frankly care who he blames for it as long as he admits that he’s wrong and ensures players’ religious liberty rights are protected.’ He described the outcome as ‘great’, noting that he had to intervene with MLB to achieve this result.
‘I want to emphasize this is the commissioner of baseball responding to me,’ Hawley explained. He confirmed that no player would be forced to wear political-messaging uniforms, and there would be no discrimination based on religious beliefs.
The controversy began when Giants pitcher Landen Roupp inscribed ‘Genesis 9:12-16’ on his cap during Pride Night, referencing a Bible passage about the rainbow as a sign of God’s promise. MLB initially claimed that such actions breached league rules on altering uniforms.
In his letter, Manfred pointed out that the regulation was part of a collectively bargained agreement with the MLBPA. Players are barred from decorating or modifying their gear with messages. The policy’s intention is to prevent political or social promotion, although freedom of religion is protected by the First Amendment, which was Hawley’s argument.
Hawley concluded by saying, ‘Let’s get back to playing some baseball and stop all this other stuff.’ This sentiment resonated with many who felt the league had overreached with its initial response.
