Knicks Owner’s Comments and Oakley’s Legal Battles

During the New York Knicks’ championship parade, team owner James Dolan appeared to question Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s loyalty to the Knicks by asking him if he was a ‘real Knicks fan.’ This encounter followed their public disagreement over championship watch parties.

Meanwhile, former Knicks forward Charles Oakley’s lawsuit against Madison Square Garden (MSG) and Dolan was dismissed for the third time. The legal dispute began in February 2017 when Oakley was removed from MSG following a confrontation with security. Although the charges against Oakley were eventually dropped, he filed a lawsuit claiming false imprisonment and defamation.

“For more than nine years, Mr. Oakley’s lawyers have pursued claims they knew were false,” MSG stated to the New York Post. “Those claims have now been dismissed by the Court in their entirety for a third time.”

MSG plans to take legal action against Oakley’s lawyer, Douglas Wigdor, accusing his firm of frivolous lawsuits and misuse of the judicial system. In contrast, Oakley’s legal team expressed disappointment over the court’s rulings, hoping for another chance with the Second Circuit.

Oakley, who played for the Knicks for over ten years, helped the team reach the NBA Finals in 1994. Despite his ongoing dispute with Dolan, Oakley continues to support the Knicks, attending several playoff games as they secured their first NBA Championship in more than fifty years.
