A group of investors, including U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos, has acquired a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club. This agreement with Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners, offers a path to potentially gaining a controlling interest in the club.
Details of the Investment
FSG confirmed the sale of approximately 30% to one-third of the Premier League club, marking Bezos’ first venture into sports ownership. Bezos invests through the K5 Sports fund, part of 1892 Holdings, managed by Amit Bhatia.
Sources reveal the potential for gaining a controlling share within a year, but this is an optional opportunity, not a certain commitment.
Key Figures and Board Changes
Amit Bhatia, previously associated with Queens Park Rangers, takes on the role of vice chairman at Liverpool. On the board, he will be accompanied by Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum from K5 Sports. It’s notable that Bezos will not be on the board.
1892 Holdings includes contributions from the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and the Mittal Family Trusts.
Operational Control Remains with FSG
Despite the new investment, FSG retains majority ownership and operational control. They assured there would be no change in leadership or daily operations. FSG’s statement emphasized collaboration with the consortium to explore ways to enhance the club’s performance both on and off the field.
“The strategic investment supports Liverpool FC’s long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology, and investment,” according to FSG.
Statements from the New Investors
Amit Bhatia, speaking for 1892 Holdings, expressed pride in joining forces with Liverpool FC and FSG. He respects FSG’s achievements and looks forward to helping the club maintain its success.
