Legendary Actress Eva Marie Saint Passes Away at 102

Eva Marie Saint, a renowned Oscar and Emmy-winning actress from Hollywood’s Golden Era, has passed away at the age of 102. Her representative confirmed that she died of natural causes on Tuesday, surrounded by her family and loved ones at her Los Angeles home.

Saint made a memorable film debut alongside Marlon Brando in the 1954 classic “On the Waterfront.” Her role as Edie Doyle earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Five years later, Saint solidified her status in Hollywood’s Golden Era by starring with Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest.” In the 1959 thriller, she played the role of Eve Kendall, known as the “Hitchcock Blonde.”

Through a career spanning more than seven decades, Saint worked with celebrated actors such as Montgomery Clift, Henry Fonda, and Paul Newman. Her co-stars also included Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Warren Beatty, James Garner, George C. Scott, Burt Lancaster, and Tom Hanks.

Her other noteworthy films include “A Hatful of Rain,” “Raintree County,” “Exodus,” “The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming,” “Grand Prix,” “Nothing in Common,” and “Superman Returns.”

Saint was a familiar face on television and the stage. She earned five Emmy nominations and won in 1990 for the miniseries “People Like Us.” On Broadway, she appeared in “The Trip to Bountiful” before being cast in “On the Waterfront” by director Elia Kazan.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in Albany and Delmar, New York, Saint attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Initially planning to become a teacher, acting changed the course of her life.

Saint was married to director Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his death in 2016. She is survived by their two children, Darrell and Laurette, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Her death marks the end of a significant chapter in Hollywood’s history. Saint leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances alongside many of the most prominent stars and filmmakers of the 20th century.
