Concerns Over Candidate’s Behavior Amid Senate Campaign

3 weeks ago 0

Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate vying for a Senate seat in Maine, faced a significant hurdle as his campaign gained momentum last summer. Revelations emerged that Mr. Platner had been involved in sexually explicit messaging with multiple women, a fact disclosed by his wife, Amy Gertner, to senior campaign members.

This disclosure occurred at a critical point in his campaign against Senator Susan Collins. Given that female voters represent a large portion of the electorate in Maine, this situation carried the potential to undermine his efforts significantly.

The campaign’s internal accounts confirmed Mr. Platner’s behavior. Amy Gertner, who married Mr. Platner in November 2023, stated the couple was addressing these issues through marriage counseling. Different campaign officials have provided varied details, but the core allegation of inappropriate communication stands.

Genevieve McDonald, previously the political director for the Platner campaign, noted that Ms. Gertner had reached out with concerns just before a significant Labor Day rally featuring Bernie Sanders. The timing highlighted the potential impact of her husband’s actions as a political liability. Ms. Gertner reportedly mentioned that Mr. Platner’s exchanges involved around a dozen women.

These developments surfaced amid increasing attention on Mr. Platner’s campaign, posing challenges just as he was beginning to make headway with voters across the state.
