Trump to Speak with Putin Amid Suspected Plague Case in Russia

13 minutes ago 0

President Donald Trump announced plans to discuss a suspected pneumonic plague case in Siberia with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This call comes amid heightened health precautions in countries bordering Russia.

During a session with reporters, Trump confirmed his upcoming call with Putin but did not specify the exact timing, stating it would happen “very soon.”

The U.S. administration is closely monitoring the reports from Russia’s Irkutsk region. The U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued a health alert about a suspected pneumonic plague death, leading to quarantine measures and hospital closures in the area.

A State Department spokesperson emphasized the safety of Americans as their highest priority. However, many details remain unconfirmed. The U.S. encourages Russian authorities to provide accurate and timely information about the situation.

Americans in the vicinity have been advised to follow local health directives, avoid affected medical facilities, and seek medical attention if they develop fever or respiratory symptoms. The State Department maintains a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Russia and advises Americans currently in the country to leave.

This outbreak has resulted in neighboring countries implementing enhanced health and sanitary measures. Nations including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan are acting in response to the reports.

The death of a 28-year-old employee from the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, attributed to pneumonia of unknown origin, has sparked these precautions. Despite Russian authorities denying links to plague pathogens, WHO assesses the public risk as low.

The CDC continues to monitor the situation closely and collaborates with U.S. government agencies. At present, there is no indication of a threat to the United States. Pneumonic plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, can spread through respiratory droplets and is treatable with antibiotics if detected early.

U.S. officials seek further information on the incident in Irkutsk to assess any potential threats. Trump noted the administration might have additional information by tomorrow.
