Eva Marie Saint, the renowned actress, passed away at 102. Her acting career began in theater and television before she made her film debut in On the Waterfront in 1954. Her portrayal of Edie in the film, opposite Marlon Brando, earned her an Oscar.
Elia Kazan directed the film, which highlighted union corruption in Hoboken, New Jersey. Saint performed a memorable scene with Brando after a successful screen test arranged by Kazan. The chemistry witnessed during the test secured her role.
Saint was born in Albany, New York, and raised in Delmar. She attended the Actors Studio in New York and performed on Broadway and live television in the late 1940s. Despite her success in these mediums, she transitioned to film at nearly 30 years old.
Five years after On the Waterfront, she starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest as Eve Kendall, a femme fatale opposite Cary Grant. Although her on-screen roles varied, her personal life was different. After marrying director Jeffrey Hayden in 1951, Saint limited her roles to focus on her family.
Saint returned to television in the 1970s and won an Emmy in 1990 for the miniseries People Like Us. Her contributions to cinema, television, and theater remain impactful, leaving a lasting legacy.
