Richard Gere and the Pursuit of Happiness Through Buddhism

1 hour ago 0

Richard Gere, a seasoned presence in Hollywood, focuses on maintaining a humble outlook despite decades of fame. As an executive producer of “Wisdom of Happiness,” a documentary on the Dalai Lama’s teachings, Gere continues his over 40-year journey in Buddhism. Reflecting on his experiences, Gere notes that no one is immune to ego and that everyone faces internal challenges like greed and anger.

“Everyone possesses emotions such as greed, anger, and jealousy,” Gere explained. “Through Buddhist training, I learned these are not core aspects of who I am but rather temporary additions, like passing dark clouds.” Gere emphasized that happiness comes from within, suggesting that external success cannot offer lasting joy.

Gere, who splits his time between Spain and upstate New York, highlights the importance of inner peace over material possessions. “True happiness isn’t derived from what I own,” he remarked. His philosophy is that one should focus on changing personal habits and mindsets to experience genuine joy.

In his personal life, Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, find contentment outside of the Hollywood spotlight. Their family includes two sons, and Silva’s son from a previous relationship. Gere shares that talking with his oldest son, Homer, reminds him of his own younger days and how he has grown less concerned with external opinions over the years.

Gere credits his upbringing with instilling in him a desire to help others. He grew up in a Christian family in Pennsylvania, where his parents taught him values that he later expanded on through Buddhism. “Buddhism allowed me to explore deeper questions about human existence and my own capabilities,” Gere shared.

The actor draws parallels between the work ethic learned from farmers and his current mindset. His experience with farming taught him acceptance and perseverance. Gere relates these values to the disciplined lifestyle of the Dalai Lama, who rises early to work on his mind and heart daily.

For Gere, the creation of “Wisdom of Happiness” is deeply personal. He and Silva experienced an emotional connection to the film. “My wife’s emotional response to the film made me realize its impact,” he recalled. He hopes it will inspire viewers to embrace compassion and kindness.

Gere concluded with a message of hope. “Basic kindness and a generous spirit are crucial,” he said. “Wisdom of Happiness” is available to rent or purchase, offering audiences a chance to explore its themes further.
