An investigation by The Athletic concluded that former NFL reporter Dianna Russini violated company standards due to her relationship with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. This led to her resignation in April. The investigation did not determine the nature of Russini’s relationship with Vrabel. Vrabel acknowledged his actions but did not address photos circulated of him and Russini at an Arizona resort.

Actions Taken by Vrabel

Vrabel temporarily stepped away from the team during the NFL draft to commence counseling, returning shortly afterward. A report stated, “We neither completed an investigation nor reached any conclusion about the full relationship between Vrabel and Russini, but the public photographs are sufficient to conclude a violation of company policy.”

Review of Russini’s Work

Mike Semel, editorial director at The Athletic, reviewed Russini’s work, analyzing 903 stories, 204 podcast episodes, and 77 videos. “Most of Dianna’s stories were unrelated to Vrabel, and those mentioning him did not raise concerns,” Ginsberg communicated. However, editor’s notes were added to four pieces that failed to meet standards.

Details of Allegations

Photos showcasing Vrabel and Russini were captured in Sedona, Arizona, before NFL meetings in Phoenix. Both Vrabel and Russini are married. The NFL did not investigate Vrabel’s conduct. Semel remarked, “Russini’s relationship with Vrabel clearly violated The Athletic’s standards. Regardless of its romantic nature, it was a breach that should have been disclosed.”

Vrabel’s Coaching Record

Vrabel led the Patriots to a Super Bowl in February, where they were defeated by Seattle. He achieved Coach of the Year honors during his first season, surpassing Jacksonville’s Liam Coen by 63 points.

Russini’s Statement

Russini expressed strong support for her career and past work, maintaining her professionalism and dedication. “The Athletic backed my work, showing confidence and pride in my journalism.” Despite media speculation, Russini stated she was stepping away not due to accepting constructed narratives, but to avoid further influence on her career.
