Christiane Amanpour, a longstanding anchor for CNN International, revealed her plan to leave the network next summer. This decision follows more than four decades of her association with CNN.
Mark Thompson, CNN CEO, informed staff about Amanpour’s departure with a memo. He stated that early in 2027, Amanpour would reduce her show, ‘Amanpour,’ to a weekly segment, which would conclude in May. Her departure from CNN is set for the end of June.
“After more than 43 years at CNN, Christiane has decided that the time is right to begin a new chapter,” said Thompson. “I’m very sorry to see her go, but I accept this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally.”
Amanpour acknowledged the challenges faced by her colleagues and herself during a broadcast. She emphasized her commitment to independent journalism amidst political, financial, and field-related pressures.
“I will continue to be fiercely independent for as long as I am here and beyond,” Amanpour said. “Remember: always be truthful, not neutral.”
CNN staffers expressed surprise at the announcement. One described her as CNN’s “reigning titan,” while another called her “the heart and soul” of the company. Despite departing, Amanpour’s reputation in journalism is expected to endure.
At 68, Amanpour is highly regarded among peers but has her critics. She dismisses neutrality in reporting, arguing for truth as the primary objective. In her speech to Columbia Journalism School graduates, she warned against false equivalency under the guise of objectivity.
Her coverage has stirred controversy, notably during the Israel-Hamas conflict and comments about the Trump presidency that drew backlash. Despite past critiques, Amanpour remains undeterred in challenging leadership decisions that conflict with journalistic integrity.
This will be the first major journalist departure following Warner Bros. Discovery’s acquisition by Skydance CEO David Ellison. Although Amanpour’s decision isn’t linked to the corporate takeover, she’s been vocal about network management.
Earlier, Amanpour expressed concerns about Ellison’s management style, notably how he handled CBS News and the possible impacts on CNN’s content integrity.
