Democrats’ New Strategy in Rural States

Democrats face challenges in deep-red states and are employing a novel tactic for Senate races by encouraging their nominees to step aside and bolster independent candidates. This strategy aims to improve their chances by narrowing the competition against Republicans.

Nebraska

Independent candidate Dan Osborn, who nearly upset Republican Sen. Deb Fischer two years ago, gains advantage as Democratic nominee Cindy Burbank withdraws against GOP Sen. Pete Ricketts.

Idaho

Democratic candidate David Roth’s exit paves the way for independent Todd Achilles to compete directly with Republican Sen. Jim Risch.

Montana

Though Democrats urge Alani Bankhead to exit the race, she resists, complicating efforts to support independent Seth Bodnar’s contest against Republican nominee Kurt Alme.

South Dakota

Calls for Julian Beaudion to exit aim to enhance independent Brian Bengs’s campaign against GOP Sen. Mike Rounds.

Democrats argue this strategy could divert Republican resources away from other competitive races.

Wisconsin Governor Race Shake-up

Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes has exited the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor just weeks before the primary election. His decision acknowledges state Rep. Francesca Hong as the likely nominee due to her expanding lead in the polls.

Barnes’s departure follows similar exits, including Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, prompting Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley to re-enter the race with Gov. Tony Evers’ backing. Crowley’s alliance with Evers may energize moderate Democrats worried about Hong’s appeal in a general election.

Crowley aims to consolidate support from Barnes’s backers, while Hong remains undecided about seeking his endorsement. Her focus remains on building an inclusive campaign.
