Choosing Between Wild-Caught and Farm-Raised Fish

4 weeks ago 0

At seafood counters nationwide, shoppers face a decision: wild-caught or farm-raised fish? Wild-caught fish often carries a reputation for being a premium choice, whereas farm-raised options are typically more affordable and accessible.

Understanding the Differences

The debate isn’t as simple as it seems. Two seafood experts discussed the nuances with Fox News Digital, highlighting key differences between the two types of fish.

Wild-caught fish is often seen as a superior option, while farm-raised fish remains popular for its affordability.

Markets for Both Types

Mark Frisch, executive vice president of seafood distributor BSF, emphasized that not all farm-raised seafood is either good or bad. He explained that, just like any other protein, different farms operate in different ways, creating markets for both types of fish. Frisch advised consumers to trust providers who source products responsibly and to educate themselves about seafood options.

Navigating Seafood Choices

Frisch noted that consumers often struggle with seafood selection due to the variety of labels, certifications, and species available. Unlike beef or chicken, which are often farmed and come with straightforward USDA grading, seafood lacks a similar standard. Shoppers are faced with competing claims about sustainability, nutrition, and overall fish quality.

Health Considerations

Dr. Kristin Struble, an Arizona-based pediatrician, shared insights on health aspects. She highlighted that wild fish tend to have a better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio due to their natural diet. Struble mentioned that farm-raised fish are usually fed corn, soy, and other plant-based feeds, and might receive astaxanthin supplements to boost their coloring. While synthetic astaxanthin is deemed safe by the FDA, consumers should be aware of mercury risks in some wild fish species such as bigeye tuna and swordfish.

Salmon, whether wild or responsibly farmed, was identified as an excellent low-mercury option by Struble, stressing its safety and quality for consumers.
