The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has commenced, welcoming a massive influx of riders to Sturgis, South Dakota, and the surrounding Black Hills. This marks the 86th year of the event, celebrated as the world’s largest motorcycle rally.
Spanning ten days each August, the rally draws approximately 500,000 people to this town of 7,100. Attendees experience a variety of activities including races, concerts, group rides, and more.
Sturgis’s atmosphere dramatically shifts as motorcycles fill downtown roads and riders explore the expansive Black Hills.
The rally extends beyond urban limits with concerts, races, stunt performances, motorcycle demonstrations, vendor exhibitions, and group rides throughout the area.
This year’s event boasts country music sensation Lainey Wilson as the headliner, performing on August 12. Other acts scheduled to appear include YUNGBLUD, Megadeth, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rob Zombie, and Insane Clown Posse.
On August 12, two women’s motorcycle rides—Women Riders World Relay and Shantell’s Sisterhood Ride—will conclude at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. They will also participate in the Pearl’s Jam event, celebrating women in motorcycling.
Harley-Davidson is set to unveil its new Deadwood motorcycle at the rally, inspired by post-war Sturgis Rally history, while Indian Motorcycle introduces the Chief Vintage Sturgis SD Edition, featuring nostalgic paint and badging.
The rally serves as a starting point for rides throughout the Black Hills, leading to destinations like Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Bear Butte State Park, and historic towns like Deadwood.
“Pappy was the man who put the brotherhood in motorcycles,” remarked Sturgis motorcycle historian Coe Meyer.
Attendees often venture to Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming, a noted attraction.
Established by Pappy Hoel, an Indian motorcycle dealer, in 1938, the rally carries a rich legacy. His dedication linked Sturgis with motorcycle culture, supporting World War II veterans and pioneering motorsports.
Vinny Terranova, associated with Pappy’s Vintage Cycles, recalls Hoel’s charismatic and hospitable nature. Both Pappy and his wife Pearl ensured no guest left hungry.
After close to fifty years at the helm, the Hoels transferred management to the City of Sturgis in the 1980s.
