Celebrity Couple’s Wedding Fundraising Sparks Debate

2 hours ago 0

Some guests find a celebrity couple’s approach to wedding gifts “tacky” while others argue that cash is more practical. AnnaLynne McCord, known for roles on shows like “90210,” and her fiancé, Danny Cipriani, created a Honeyfund page. This online registry invites donations towards their wedding costs.

The registry outlines items ranging from $100 to $600. These include the marriage license, reception drinks, photography, rehearsal dinner, and floral arrangements.

“Tacky is an ugly word, but it’s really unkind to ask your guests to give you money for any occasion,” says Diane Gottsman, a Texas-based etiquette expert. According to Gottsman, directly asking for cash is impolite. Couples should allow family or their website to communicate their needs.

Couples should provide various options for guests through a registry. Although cash is easy to offer and accepted for honeymoon funds or a home’s down payment, it shouldn’t be the only choice. Some guests prefer to select a gift themselves.

“A gift is not an admission ticket to your wedding,” Gottsman explains. A registry makes it easier, but guests choose how to express their generosity.

Online discussions reveal mixed feelings about cash wedding registries. Some Reddit users view it as a modern trend while others find asking for wedding expenses “off-putting.”

In one Reddit forum, discussions centered around whether it’s wrong to request money instead of gifts. Responses highlight a growing acceptance of cash gifts, with many couples prior receiving cash.

In some cultures, cash is the accepted form of gift-giving. One Reddit user noted that in their Asian culture, money is the traditional gift.

“It’s a general taboo around money in American culture,” commented a Reddit user. They noted that open discussions about money are often frowned upon.

Some forum users advised against explicitly asking for money. They recommend having a honeymoon fund or limited physical gifts on the registry to subtly signal preferences.

Gottsman encourages couples to plan a wedding within their means, highlighting that seeking money alters the event’s tone.

“Say, ‘I have something else in mind, and I’m really hoping you enjoy it,’ instead of a negative response to giving cash,” Gottsman advises.

Sentimental or thoughtful gifts are timeless. Gift receipts are advisable for returns, ensuring the couple appreciates your generosity.
