Catherine, Princess of Wales, highlighted the importance of real human connections in today’s digital era through a personal essay published on Friday. The princess expressed concern about children growing up with lives dominated by screens, shortly after the UK announced plans to ban social media access for children under 16.
Reflecting on her recent visit to the Italian city of Reggio Emilia, the princess emphasized the need for society to foster genuine connections among children. She warned of the pervasive influence of screens and highlighted the irreplaceable value of human interactions.
“In an increasingly digitalized world, where so much of life is mediated through screens, the need for genuine human connection has never been greater,” she wrote.
Catherine suggested spending time in nature or engaging in creative activities as ways to develop essential skills and emotions that technology cannot replace. These include awareness, empathy, humility, and love.
Her essay was featured on the website of the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood, a charity she supports. Although the British royal family traditionally refrains from political discussions, the timing of her essay aligns closely with the British government’s recent policy announcement concerning children’s use of social media.
