Bill Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time,” advised Democrats to avoid using their distaste for President Donald Trump as an excuse to spoil the upcoming America 250 celebration. Maher emphasized that Democrats should not treat patriotism as an embarrassment.
During his show, Maher pointed to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, highlighting the presence of American flags. He cautioned that Democrats cannot reclaim the flag in just an hour if they consistently present patriotism negatively.
The country is preparing for the annual Fourth of July celebration, with Trump planning large-scale festivities for America’s 250th anniversary. Despite this, many Democrats have chosen not to engage due to their displeasure with Trump, a stance Maher criticized while targeting both sides.
“I’m not saying Trump doesn’t want to muddy the distinction between himself and the country,” Maher said. “He tries to blur the line. Don’t be an accomplice.”
Maher urged the Democrats not to dismiss national pride, focusing instead on the country’s significance for the upcoming Fourth of July. He described Trump as a temporary caretaker of America, suggesting that Democrats should not assist in any self-centered narratives.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted in June, 64% of Republicans planned to display an American flag or flag bunting on July 4, compared to 27% of Democrats. Maher encouraged Democrats not to let personal grievances disrupt their enjoyment of the holiday.
“Go to the party. It’s a big celebration,” he urged.
Maher assured viewers that America’s prosperity and appeal remain intact despite Trump’s actions, stating the nation is still a desirable place by global standards.
In his closing remarks, Maher focused on rallying Democrats to embrace patriotism, emphasizing that ignoring it due to discontent with leadership undermines American principles.
“The message that most threatens authoritarians isn’t ‘America sucks.’ It’s ‘America is ours too,’” Maher stated.
Maher called for Democrats to put aside differences with Trump for the country’s 250th anniversary. He warned against letting the Fourth of July become another reason for partisan negativity, urging a focus on unity.
