Tensions Rise as NYC Mayor Calls for Netanyahu’s Arrest

The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, sharply criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, labeling him a “clown.” This came after Mamdani demanded federal authorities arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his arrival in New York.

Mamdani accused Netanyahu of being a “war criminal” and the “architect of a horrific genocide” against Palestinians, urging federal enforcement of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant. Netanyahu is set to speak at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Danon dismissed Mamdani’s remarks as baseless, characterizing them as a publicity stunt. He advised the mayor to focus on local issues like homelessness and garbage management, rather than foreign affairs. Danon insisted that ensuring the safety of New York’s Jewish community, amidst rising antisemitism, should be Mamdani’s primary concern.

The NYC Mayor’s YouTube channel released a video on July 21, where Mamdani reiterated his accusations against Netanyahu. Mamdani accused the Israeli leader of causing over 73,000 deaths and the maiming of countless children, with survivors facing amputations without anesthesia. He also alleged that Netanyahu targeted medical facilities and impeded humanitarian aid.

Counterarguments

Danon rejected these claims, arguing that humanitarian aid flows into Gaza daily. “Nobody speaks about these issues anymore,” he said, accusing Mamdani of reviving old accusations of genocide and starvation. Danon stated that today, there are no longer humanitarian issues in Gaza.

Despite Mamdani’s calls for action, he admitted City Hall lacks the authority to act on the warrant independently. He urged the federal government to recognize the ICC and enforce the warrant. Mamdani stated, “Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large.”

Legal Challenges

Israeli officials firmly deny the charges, with Netanyahu’s office dismissing the ICC’s jurisdiction as illegitimate. Danon argued that there is no effective warrant against Netanyahu in the U.S., which is not an ICC member state. He described Mamdani’s remarks as political maneuvering.

Danon noted that serious global issues, such as the conflict with Iran, demand attention. Netanyahu has planned to address the United Nations, undeterred by the controversy. Danon suggested the mayor attend the U.N. assembly to listen to Netanyahu’s speech, hinting at potential learning opportunities.

According to Danon, besides attending Netanyahu’s speech, there is little the mayor can do. He noted that even last year, Mayor Adams attended the Prime Minister’s speech.
