U.S. Commander’s Visit to Cuba and Security Discussions Amid Tensions

4 weeks ago 0

Washington, D.C. (AP) — The U.S. military’s top commander in Latin America engaged in a meeting with Cuban military leaders on Friday for a ‘brief exchange on operational security matters’ near the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This visit marks the latest in a series of U.S. officials traveling to the island nation as President Donald Trump increases pressure on its leaders.

President Trump has stated that Cuba is on the agenda following the U.S. military’s capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a January operation. In recent months, Trump’s administration has enforced a petroleum blockade, stationed warships in the Caribbean, and filed federal charges against a former Cuban president.

Key advisors to President Trump, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, have had meetings with Cuban officials to discuss possible improvements in diplomatic relations. However, the U.S. side left these discussions dissatisfied, leading to additional sanctions against the Cuban government.

In addition to meeting with Cuban military officials on Friday, U.S. General Francis L. Donovan assessed the security of the naval base and discussed ‘the safety of military personnel and their families, and operational preparedness with base officials,’ according to a statement from the U.S. Southern Command posted on X.

The United States continues to maintain its base at Guantanamo Bay despite decades of tensions with Cuba’s socialist rulers, whom Trump seeks to depose. Currently, the U.S. Navy has a small number of ships in the Caribbean, a significantly reduced presence compared to the fleet during the operation against Maduro.

The Pentagon announced on Friday that a new unit of 1,300 sailors and Marines would replace the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, which was deployed in the region last year.
