A tragic shark attack occurred on Saturday, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man near Horseshoe Reef close to Rottnest Island, Australia. The incident was reported just before 10 a.m., according to police. The island is situated approximately 19 miles west of Perth.
Efforts to save the man were unsuccessful. He was brought to shore but did not regain consciousness. A spokesperson from St. John WA Ambulance shared, “A 38-year-old man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark.” Paramedics met the victim onshore, but attempts to revive him failed.
Authorities suspect a great white shark was involved in the attack off Rottnest Island, an area known for its tourist appeal on Australia’s western coast. Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advised the public to exercise extra caution in the area. Reports confirmed the presence of a great white shark.
Footage aired by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation displayed police presence and rescue operations at the scene. This incident is Australia’s second fatal shark attack in the year.
In January, a similar tragedy occurred when a 12-year-old succumbed a week after a shark attack in Sydney Harbor. During the same period, three people suffered non-fatal shark encounters along the New South Wales coast.
