Nigerian Hostage Rescue Unveils Harsh Reality of Captivity Under Jihadists

The recent rescue operation in Nigeria marks the largest in the nation’s history. Nigerian forces freed at least 308 victims, most of whom were held for six months by jihadi kidnappers. The majority of those rescued were taken during a raid on Feb. 3 from the Woro community in Kwara State. That attack resulted in the deaths of 160 people in the village.

Victims recounted their ordeal to the Associated Press, revealing they were targeted for not accepting the religious beliefs of their captors. A woman amongst them, Hauwa Saliu, shared that the kidnappers frequently questioned if victims had embraced jihad.

“We prayed to God to help us go back home, but it never really crossed our minds that we were going to go back home,” Hauwa Saliu expressed.

Another victim, Amira Saliu, described harsh conditions in a forested area by a river. They had to extinguish fires and hide from helicopters. As a nurse, she assisted in delivering ten babies without medical supplies or sanitary gloves.

“I had no choice but to use my bare hands,” she noted.

Mary Ishaya, 44, recalled the scarcity of food and being forced to bury those who died.

“I still cannot find the right words to describe what has happened to us. We saw death and suffering,” she stated.

Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, confirmed that 46 victims are currently receiving medical care. He emphasized the dire nature of the situation.

“This is indeed, indeed a very sad situation. We’ve not yet come to terms with it. It’s truly a shame that this has happened,” said Governor AbdulRasaq.

The incident underscores ongoing tensions between Nigeria’s Islamist insurgency in the north and the Christian population, which makes up about 45% of its citizens. On Christmas Day, President Donald Trump, alongside Nigeria’s government, ordered missile strikes on Islamic State-affiliated groups to safeguard the country’s Christians. In May, the U.S. conducted further military actions, leading to the reported death of a senior Islamic State leader.
