Badar Khan Suri, a researcher at Georgetown University and citizen of India, was released on bond after a federal appeals court ruling. Originally detained by federal immigration authorities, Suri was taken from his home in Virginia and moved through multiple detention facilities.
He alleged that his detention was unjustly driven by his family’s support for Palestinians in the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Hamas. The appeals court decision allows Suri to stay free while further legal proceedings continue.
Suri’s release marks a significant point in his legal battle. He arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport on May 14, 2025, where he was warmly welcomed by his wife, Mapheze Saleh, following a judge’s order for his release from a detention center in Texas.
