The New York Knicks are currently facing scrutiny over a rumored internal divide concerning a potential visit to the White House. Renowned analyst Stephen A. Smith has suggested that owner James Dolan may be dissatisfied with his players over this issue. The speculation arises as the Knicks embark on their title defense, having clinched their first NBA championship since 1973.
The concerns link back to Dolan’s relationship with President Donald Trump. Trump made history by attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, marking the first instance of a sitting U.S. president attending an NBA Finals game. He was seen seated alongside Dolan during the Knicks’ matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.
Smith discussed the rumored tension, clarifying that he had not confirmed the claims directly with the players. “This is what I’ve been hearing,” Smith stated. “I don’t know how much truth there is to it because I haven’t heard from the players directly. However, discussions around New York City and Madison Square Garden indicate that the atmosphere feels somewhat different.”
Smith further speculated that Dolan could be upset if the players decide against visiting the White House. He described Dolan as “a walking embodiment of petulance” and suggested that the owner’s close ties with Trump might influence his reaction.
Smith also pondered the possible long-term effects for the Knicks, expressing concern that Dolan might become complacent following the team’s recent championship victory. “He’s that kind of guy,” Smith commented. “Dolan might carry an attitude, given his connection with Trump and his desire to visit the White House.”
However, these claims remain unverified. In September, Knicks head coach Mike Brown mentioned that the organization was still deliberating on the visit and that the decision would be made collectively.
On the court, the Knicks have faced challenges in their title defense. They started the season with three straight losses but rebounded with a 111-97 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Karl-Anthony Towns made a significant contribution with 27 points and 20 rebounds, while Jalen Brunson put up 23 points.
The Knicks are scheduled to play against the Chicago Bulls in their upcoming game.
