34 minutes ago 0

A California fisherman narrowly avoided injury after a suspected shark attack on his kayak off the coast of Cambria. The incident occurred near Leffingwell Landing around 9:30 a.m. on Monday. The fisherman was thrown into the water when something hit the underside of his kayak, as reported by the Cambria Fire Department.

He managed to climb back into the kayak and head toward the shore. However, holes in the hull allowed water to fill the vessel, forcing him to swim the remaining distance to safety.

“A great white shark swims underwater.”

According to the fire department, the fisherman reached the shore unharmed. Firefighters launched a rescue boat to retrieve the damaged kayak and his belongings.

Dr. Chris Lowe from California State University, Long Beach’s Shark Lab reviewed the damage photos. He found it likely that a shark was involved, although definitive confirmation remains pending.

Previous incidents have occurred in the area. In May 2012, a similar shark encounter happened near Leffingwell Landing, involving Joey Nocchi. He was thrown into the water but emerged uninjured. In 2019, another fisherman, David Zamora, had a comparable experience two miles offshore, with a great white shark biting his kayak. Zamora also survived without harm.

Since 1950, California has recorded 233 shark incidents, including 36 related to kayaking or canoeing, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. These incidents involve shark contact with kayaks, surfboards, or other equipment. Often, sharks make exploratory bites to inspect unfamiliar items, such as kayaks, without intending to attack.

Following the latest suspected shark encounter, the Cambria Fire Department advised ocean users to exercise caution, be aware of their surroundings, and avoid water activities when sharks are observed. They also urged anyone in immediate danger to call 911 for help.
