Recent violent assaults in New York City’s Central Park have occurred amid political silence from prominent Democrats. A suspect remains at large after sexually assaulting a 39-year-old woman at knifepoint on Saturday evening. The attack happened near East 67th Street and East Drive. This marks the fifth reported rape in Central Park’s precinct this year, as indicated by NYPD data.
Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector and Fox News Contributor, commented on the situation: “This most recent rape was in an area that’s right near $10 million apartments and an area where you would hope that people in this city would feel safe.”
Despite earlier intervention in a different high-profile case involving seven Cornell fraternity members, New York’s top Democrats, Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James, have not commented on this particular incident. The NYPD continues to search for the suspect involved in the Central Park assault.
The Cornell case, which resulted in James being appointed as a special prosecutor, contrasts with the current lack of public response to the Central Park assault. Mauro remarked on the political response: “Let something hit the news like the Cornell case and all of a sudden they’re all over the media and they’re on a soapbox and they’re holding press conferences.” He also noted the proximity to elections, suggesting this might influence the current silence.
An arrest warrant has been issued for a rideshare driver in another sexual assault case, drawing attention due to the driver’s history of prior sex abuse arrests in New York City.
The victim in the recent Central Park incident was hospitalized and is stable, according to police. Julie Menin, New York City Council speaker, expressed her outrage on social media, emphasizing that every New Yorker should feel safe.
I am outraged by this horrific act of violence. My thoughts are with the survivor, and I hope she makes a full recovery. Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in our city,Menin stated.
The NYPD urges anyone with information to contact their Sex Crimes Hotline or Crime Stoppers. As of now, five rapes have been reported in Central Park this year. Last year, only three such incidents were recorded by this time.
Mauro stated that the current trend in crime in Central Park does not reflect well on public safety. “Central Park felonies and subway crime” are key indicators police use to assess safety conditions, he said, and both metrics are deteriorating.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the recent attack at a news conference. He emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting the survivor and working with service providers to close support gaps and prevent future incidents.
Mamdani noted: Our administration is working to ensure that the survivor has the support that she needs to navigate the next steps. We are going to continue to work with survivors at large, as well as providers and city partners, to strengthen prevention and address gaps in support and to also hold perpetrators of sexual assault accountable and to ensure that this is a city that puts survivors’ needs first.
