Three individuals were rescued by helicopter after being stranded on a steep mountainside in Northern California. A distress call led to a rapid response from rescue teams.

The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office reported the group was located on the Sierra Buttes, near a lookout tower close to the mountain’s summit. Images and videos showed the helicopter near the rugged area as rescuers maneuvered to reach the group.

The sheriff’s office received an alert at around 2:30 p.m. from a Garmin inReach satellite device, which sent an SOS to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. Deputies initiated a search and rescue operation, calling upon the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Mountain Rescue Team and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office’s RAVEN helicopter crew.

Upon spotting the stranded individuals, a rescue member was lowered to them from the helicopter. All three were hoisted to safety and transported to a landing area where deputies awaited.

The sheriff’s office stated, “Due to the difficult terrain and hazardous location, a helicopter hoist rescue was necessary.”

Authorities expressed gratitude to the teams for their “professionalism, coordination, and assistance” in conducting a successful rescue. The Sierra Buttes feature a lookout near the top, elevating approximately 8,600 feet above the North Yuba River canyon, as noted by the Pacific Crest Trail Association.

While the details of how the individuals got stranded were not provided, the community praised the rescue efforts online. Commenters showed appreciation for the teams involved, highlighting the importance of the RAVEN helicopter unit in regional support.

“Sheriff Balaam’s use of the RAVEN team for needed assistance is commendable, showing their value to the region,” a commenter noted. Another praised the rescue, saying, “Impressive and grateful for the community’s support.”

This rescue followed two other significant rescues on Northern California mountains earlier in the month. A 39-year-old Florida man was previously airlifted after falling on the Whitney Glacier, while two youths from Salt Lake City were rescued after being trapped on Mount Shasta.
