Record Early Voting Turnout in Georgia’s Midterm Elections

6 hours ago 0

Georgia witnessed a historic increase in first-day early voting for a midterm election, as reported by state officials. On Tuesday, over 188,600 voters cast their ballots in person, a major increase from the 53,000 early voters in the 2022 midterms. This substantial rise reflects the ongoing trend of increased early voting in the state.

Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s Secretary of State, emphasized the significance of this turnout. He stated, “This record-breaking turnout proves that voters have confidence in the integrity of our elections.” He credited the successful administration of elections to the 159 county officials responsible for overseeing the process.

While early voting figures provide insight into voter engagement, they have proved unreliable in predicting election outcomes in Georgia. Previously dominated by Democrats, early voting has seen more Republican participation since the 2022 elections, adding complexity to forecasts.

The turnout surge follows a TV debate between Republican candidate Mike Collins and Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff. The debate highlighted Ossoff’s critical examination of Collins, a former U.S. Representative.

Newsweek reached out to both campaigns for comments regarding the elections.

Both U.S. Senate seats in Georgia are currently held by Democrats. However, Republicans control several other statewide offices. The state’s election system has faced scrutiny from former President Trump and the Republican Party over recent cycles.

Vance’s Visit to Georgia: Key Information

Vice President JD Vance made a visit to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Wednesday morning. The event commenced at 10:40 a.m. local time. Supporters greeted Vance with chants of “48!” as he arrived to deliver his speech.

While details of Vance’s speech were not immediately available, his tour with Donald Trump has been part of a broader effort to rally support for Republican candidates nationwide ahead of Election Day.

Prior to his Georgia visit, Vance rallied in Tyler, Texas, in support of state Attorney General Ken Paxton’s U.S. Senate bid. He criticized Democratic candidate James Talarico and announced a new deal with Delek Refinery in Tyler under the Defense Production Act.

Early Voting Trends in Georgia

Raffensperger’s office reported 134,962 votes cast on the first day of early voting in 2022, marking a 40 percent increase compared to 2022. The numbers show a steady rise, with 70,849 early votes recorded on the first day of the 2018 elections.

The COVID-19 pandemic increased early and mail-in voting, with over 4 million early votes cast during the 2020 presidential election cycle.

Georgia offers 17 days of in-person early voting, one of the longest durations in the United States. This extended period contributes to a substantial portion of votes being cast before Election Day itself.

This is an evolving story, with updates anticipated.
