A 44-year-old woman was rescued after spending 20 hours in the sea, clinging to a lifebuoy. According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the woman, a Salvadoran national, fell overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship and was found in the Ionian Sea.
The ship, Odyssey of the Seas, was sailing near the island of Zakynthos when the incident occurred. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the event to USA Today. A cargo ship, MSC Rossella III, assisted in the search, spotting the woman in the water and notifying authorities. The Coast Guard quickly responded, rescuing her.
Reports indicate the woman deliberately jumped off the ship because she wanted to disembark. A Coast Guard representative told Agence France-Presse that she spent 20 hours at sea. After her rescue, she was taken to the port of Katakolo and transferred to a local hospital. A prosecutor has ordered a psychiatric evaluation.
The Greek authorities deployed a Coast Guard vessel and a military helicopter during the search. The incident is similar to a previous event last year when a man jumped off Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas in San Juan, Puerto Rico, attempting to evade a gambling debt. He survived and was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Fox News Digital has sought comments from Royal Caribbean regarding the incident.
