The Cleveland Guardians’ pitchers showcased their skill by setting a striking postseason record. They struck out 21 Chicago White Sox batters in a high-stakes Game 5 of the American League Division Series. With this victory, they managed to come back from a 2-0 deficit to seize a 2-0 win in the series finale.
Gavin Williams started on the mound for Cleveland and delivered a spectacular performance. He struck out 12 of the 21 batters he faced during 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing a single hit, two walks, and hitting one batter. Williams’ solid pitching was supported by Jose Ramirez’s two-run home run in the fourth inning, providing the necessary cushion. The pitch that Ramirez hit was notably low, measured at 8.88 inches off the ground. This marked the lowest postseason home run since at least 2008 as well as the lowest in Ramirez’s career.
Following Williams’ strong start, the bullpen maintained the Guardians’ momentum. Erik Sabrowski, Evan Gaddis, and Cade Smith combined to finish the game, striking out nine more batters. Sabrowski struck out the only batter he faced, and Gaddis and Smith together accounted for eight strikeouts.
Ramirez’s performance in the final games of the series was a key factor despite a challenging season. His .235 batting average, .320 on-base percentage, and .368 slugging percentage were his lowest statistics since 2015. After initially struggling in the series with a 0-for-6 start, Ramirez went 5-for-12 in the remaining games. He hit two home runs, a triple, and a double, proving his critical value to the team.
Throughout the regular season, the White Sox struggled with high strikeout rates, fifth highest in the league. This tendency intensified in this game, with their strikeout rate climbing to 63.6% on Saturday.
Cleveland’s journey to victory was noteworthy, as they lost the first two games at home, appearing to give the White Sox a chance to clinch the series at home, a feat not achieved since 1906. However, the Guardians bounced back strongly, winning three consecutive elimination games.
With this victory, the Guardians now face the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Championship Series. It marks their second ALCS appearance in the last three seasons. The series begins on Monday in Florida, with the winner advancing to face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Milwaukee Brewers in the World Series.
