Washington Commanders Losing Left Tackle Laremy Tunsil to Injury

The Washington Commanders will face a significant absence in their offense with the loss of Laremy Tunsil, their franchise left tackle. Head coach Dan Quinn announced that Tunsil needs surgery for a torn triceps. This injury will keep him sidelined indefinitely.

“It’s always tough to talk about a player missing time, particularly someone as great as LT,” stated Quinn. “He’s a fantastic teammate and his absence will be felt. We look forward to his return.”

The 32-year-old Tunsil was hurt during an individual drill on Saturday while going up against pass rusher Odafe Oweh. He fell and took a knee before leaving the field to consult with the training staff.

Tunsil signed a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension with the Commanders in March, making him the highest-paid tackle in the NFL. He has consistently been one of the top left tackles since the Miami Dolphins selected him as the 13th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Tunsil played three seasons in Miami before a trade to the Houston Texans in 2019, where he spent six years.

The Commanders acquired Tunsil last year, and he played 14 games for them. Quinn highlighted Tunsil’s skills in both run and pass plays as crucial to the team’s performance.

With Tunsil out, Brandon Coleman will step in as his replacement. Coleman started 12 games as a rookie left tackle in 2024 and performed admirably. Last year, he started three times at that position.

Quinn is confident in Coleman, emphasizing his solid preseason and readiness. The Commanders plan to keep veteran Andrew Wylie in a backup swing tackle role. Quinn, alongside general manager Adam Peters, decided not to pursue free agency for a replacement as of now.
