The Alabama Crimson Tide had a slim opportunity to secure a victory against Georgia, only for it to vanish due to a critical mistake. With just over two minutes on the clock, No. 2 Georgia faced a third-and-2 on its territory when Alabama defensive back Dijon Lee committed a costly foul.
Lee’s penalty involved grabbing a Bulldog by the jersey and hitting him twice in the face. This action resulted in a flag, granting Georgia an automatic first down. With no remaining timeouts for Alabama, Georgia used the opportunity to run down the clock, securing their win on Saturday.
Head Coach Kalen DeBoer of the Crimson Tide was visibly upset. When Lee returned to the sideline, DeBoer expressed his frustration, reportedly telling Lee that his action “cost us the game.” Initially, Lee appeared resistant, but he had little choice but to listen to his coach’s admonishment.
A few plays earlier, further controversy arose. Alabama sought a score, but Georgia may have escaped a penalty for defensive pass interference in the end zone. The following play saw Alabama’s quarterback Keelon Russell sacked out of field goal range, eliminating the chance to tie the game at 20.
With this win, Georgia handed Alabama its first loss of the season, moving to a 6-0 record.
