Former state trooper John Nagel has criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and the Democratic Party for allegedly allowing gang-linked violence linked to Somali-American communities to escalate in the Twin Cities. Residents of Eden Prairie and surrounding suburbs are reportedly living in fear due to recent gang-related incidents. These include shootings and a considerable number of shell casings found in a Bloomington neighborhood.
Community Concerns
According to Nagel, Omar should be active in addressing these issues in the area she represents. He questions her absence in meetings and lack of statements addressing the violence. Nagel, who served as a state trooper in Minnesota for 30 years, expressed his concerns in an interview with Fox News Digital.
Other Minnesota Democrats have faced criticism from Nagel, including Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. He accused them of holding back law enforcement efforts and practicing lenient crime policies that he claims are ineffective.
Statewide Leadership Response
Referring to statewide leaders such as Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison, Nagel stated that many Democrats are hesitant to enforce laws strictly, while the community desires tougher action. For him, the perceived leniency has emboldened gang members, making them feel free to break the law without fear of serious repercussions.
Accountability and Prosecution
Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher highlighted the importance of holding gang members accountable. During a press conference, he urged Moriarty’s office to adopt a firmer approach, especially regarding juvenile prosecution.
Daniel Borgertpoepping, spokesperson for Moriarty’s office, mentioned no cases related to the Bloomington incident had been submitted for charging, although they would be carefully reviewed if presented. Adam Abdihakeem Adam, an 18-year-old, has been charged with second-degree assault and riot in connection with the Eden Prairie shooting.
Moriarty assured that Adam would be held accountable, emphasizing the need for a coordinated response to violence in communities.
Addressing Ethnic Concerns
Sheriff Fletcher contested the use of the term “East African” to describe the gang members’ ethnicity. He stated that 98% of these members are Somali, thus the broader label is incorrect.
Nagel maintained that law enforcement targets those committing crimes rather than an entire community. He remarked that identifying gangs by ethnicity is not prejudicial as various ethnic gangs exist.
Solutions Proposed
Nagel proposed forming a “gang task force” as part of the solution. He believes existing laws should be strictly enforced without necessitating new legislation or additional funds. He warned that without enforcement, arrests, and incarceration, gang violence would persist in Minnesota communities.
Nagel is set to contest Rep. Omar and Independent candidate DeVelle Jackson in the midterm elections for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
