The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, confirmed on Wednesday that Iran has asked to change the venue for their discussions with the United States, following reports on this issue. Speaking to reporters, Rubio mentioned, “We believed an established forum in Turkey was agreed upon. Multiple partners were interested in attending and participating.” However, Rubio noted conflicting reports from Iran suggesting they hadn’t agreed to Turkey as the location, indicating the situation is still under negotiation. Despite these challenges, Rubio emphasized that the U.S. remains open to engaging with Iran.
A source informed Fox News on Tuesday that Iran requested for nuclear discussions with the U.S. to take place on Friday in Oman. According to Axios, Iran is pressing for the talks to occur in a bilateral format with the U.S., excluding other Arab and regional countries, which may pose challenges to U.S. diplomatic efforts in the area.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio at a recent event stated that the forum’s location is under discussion, and the U.S. is willing to engage in talks with Iran.
Rubio, however, refrained from detailing the specific topics agreed upon for discussion. He instead highlighted key issues that he believes are imperative for meaningful talks, including Iran’s ballistic missile range, sponsorship of terrorist organizations, its nuclear ambitions, and treatment of its citizens.
Recently, anti-government protests in Iran, fueled by economic woes and governmental policies, have prompted international attention. Rubio credited President Donald Trump’s strong rhetoric for halting executions of protesters, a claim the Iranian regime denies. “The Iranian leadership at the clerical level does not reflect the aspirations of its people,” remarked Rubio, emphasizing a significant divide between Iranian leadership and its populace.
Additionally, Rubio indicated that Iran’s economic difficulties are exacerbated by the regime’s use of national resources to support terrorism globally. As part of heightening tensions, a U.S. military spokesman reported the downing of an Iranian drone that “aggressively approached” a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, further complicating diplomatic interactions. Iran later claimed the drone was on a routine and lawful surveillance mission over international waters.
Fox News contributors Michael Dorgan, Greg Norman-Diamond, and Liz Friden, with Aishah Hasnie, contributed to the report.
