Tragedy struck near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island on Tuesday when a pontoon boat capsized. According to authorities, one person died and three remain missing.
The vessel sank during a memorial service, carrying mostly family members. Sixteen individuals were rescued from the water.
San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen reported that rescue teams arrived to find a three-deck pontoon almost submerged with fuel leaking from a running motor.
A dog onboard also died.
The person who died was initially alive when pulled from the icy water but did not survive. Additionally, three individuals were hospitalized due to injuries sustained from falling off the boat.
Search efforts are focused on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge, where authorities are looking for the missing persons using divers, helicopters, and boats.
Initially, two people were reported missing, but authorities revised this number to three based on witness accounts. Crispen stated, “Right now we are in full rescue mode.”
The U.S. Coast Guard announced on X that search and rescue operations are ongoing and updates will be provided as new information emerges.
