WNBA Rethinks Policy on Transgender Athletes Following Controversy

1 hour ago 0

The WNBA is re-evaluating its policy on transgender athletes in women’s sports after comments made by Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham sparked controversy. While Cunningham faced backlash for allegedly derogatory remarks against transgender individuals, she clarified her stance, emphasizing a desire to protect young female athletes from competing against biological men.

As of now, the WNBA does not have specific rules regarding transgender athlete eligibility. The current collective bargaining agreement permits only women to play in the league. However, this policy could see changes soon.

A task force of team presidents and general managers is reviewing the WNBA’s eligibility guidelines after reports surfaced of former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White expressing interest in joining the 2027 WNBA draft.

The league stated, “We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league, denouncing any bad-faith attempts to marginalize others.”

No transgender athletes have competed in the WNBA to date, but the subject has caused division among fans. Recently, protests and counter-protests took place at a Fever vs. Seattle Storm game regarding Cunningham’s comments.

The WNBA acknowledges the importance of addressing this issue and is committed to finding a balanced approach that upholds its core values.
