Was That an Alien Invasion? No, Just a Falling Rock, NASA Says

A fireball streaked across the sky at a staggering 75,000 miles per hour before disintegrating miles above New England. This phenomenon, confirmed by NASA, caused a boom that startled residents. It followed a similar event in South Carolina.

Loud Booms Along the East Coast

Residents along the East Coast experienced loud booms, particularly in Boston on Saturday and South Carolina on Thursday. NASA attributed the Boston noise to a fireball piercing through the air; the cause of the South Carolina boom remains undetermined.

On May 30, 2026, a booming sound startled residents, shaking their windows and homes. The source was a fireball over the Boston area, NASA revealed.

The fireball traveled at speeds of up to 75,000 miles per hour before entering Earth’s atmosphere. It broke apart 40 miles above the border of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

NASA explained that the disintegration released energy equivalent to 300 tons of TNT, responsible for the loud sounds. This event was independent of any meteor shower.

Speculation and Theories

Before official explanations, Boston and Rhode Island residents speculated on social media, proposing theories like nuclear attacks or alien invasions. One resident, Rich Sauro from Medfield, Massachusetts, 40 miles west of Boston, was preparing for a nap when he heard the unfamiliar noise.
