Victor Wembanyama stands out as one of basketball’s most promising young talents. In his third NBA season, he spearheaded the San Antonio Spurs’ journey to the Finals. Despite his efforts, San Antonio fell to the New York Knicks in five games. Wembanyama’s excellence was recognized with his first Defensive Player of the Year award and an All-NBA selection.
The French-born star began the 2026-27 season under immense expectations. Known for his impressive 7-foot-4 stature, he was a preseason favorite for the NBA MVP award. San Antonio was also highly favored to clinch the championship.
Public Perception Shift
During the postseason, public opinion shifted. Previously celebrated, Wembanyama found himself increasingly viewed as a contentious figure. Incidents on the court contributed to this, notably during the Western Conference semifinals when he inadvertently elbowed Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Knicks supporters grew frustrated too, often pointing to Wembanyama’s defense against Jalen Brunson during the Finals. Once a cherished hero, he quickly became a New York sports adversary. Nevertheless, Wembanyama claims to remain unaffected by such portrayals, stating, “I’m not paying attention during the Finals.”
Lessons from Criticism
Despite tuning out much of the criticism, Wembanyama expressed that he has learned from these experiences. He acknowledged, “It showed my limits more than anything else.” He reflected on finding a balance between competitive aggressiveness and overstepping boundaries. “Going out there, you need to play basketball,” Wembanyama noted, stressing the importance of focus and self-control.
Controversy and Performance
Prior to some significant games, Wembanyama attracted attention for his actions during the national anthem. He stood with his arms crossed before Game 1 of the Finals but reportedly skipped the anthem presence in Games 3 and 4. He has not commented on his stance during these moments.
Despite these challenges, Wembanyama’s performance remains stellar. He has competed in all five of San Antonio’s games this season, averaging a notable 25 points per game. The Spurs will face the Timberwolves on Saturday, with fans eagerly anticipating Wembanyama’s performance.
