Fox News correspondent Jeff Paul reports on President Donald Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following events including drone strikes on Russian oil refineries and energy targets in Ukraine. Additionally, Fox News contributor Marc Thiessen highlights a new security agreement with Denmark that allows for permanent U.S. military access and airspace control in Greenland. This agreement includes plans to reopen a Cold War-era military base.
Trump announced that large-scale oil, gas, and mineral exploration in Greenland was forthcoming. On Truth Social, he stated, “Massive oil, gas, and mineral exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!” He suggested that Greenland’s resources and its strategic location enhance security for the U.S. and Europe, emphasizing the territory’s defense significance.
The former president underscored Greenland’s unique geographical advantages, stating that it offers unparalleled time, location, and sightlines. The announcement came despite environmental concerns, as Greenland’s government ceased issuing new oil and gas exploration licenses in 2021. However, some existing licenses remain in effect, albeit dependent on further governmental approvals.
The recent U.S., Denmark, and Greenland security agreement expands U.S. military capabilities on the Arctic island, enhancing its strategic importance. Although the U.S. already had military rights in Greenland through a 1951 defense agreement, the updated arrangement strengthens Washington’s potential for establishing new military facilities, contingent on regulatory consultations.
This agreement also curtails non-NATO military activities on the island and includes protections against hazardous foreign investments in sensitive sectors, such as natural resources and critical infrastructure.
Trump had previously shown interest in acquiring Greenland, citing national security needs; however, the agreement does not transfer sovereignty over Greenland to the U.S. The island remains a self-governing entity under the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen managing foreign, defense, and security policies while Greenland governs its domestic affairs, including mineral resources.
