Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach had an excellent game for UCLA, stepping up in his first start to lead the Bruins to a 17-7 win over Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. This victory keeps UCLA unbeaten in the Big Ten, marking an important win in their season.
Dieffenbach took over for Nico Iamaleava, who was sidelined with a knee injury from a previous game against Oregon. Despite being new in this role, Dieffenbach demonstrated impressive skills, passing for 264 yards and setting up crucial plays that contributed to the win.
One of his key moments was a six-play, 89-yard drive in the fourth quarter. This helped secure the game for the Bruins, who improved to a 6-0 record under Coach Bob Chesney. During this game, UCLA faced Wisconsin’s strong defense, which ranks 15th in total defense and ninth in passing yards allowed. Even though UCLA managed only 3.2 yards per carry, Dieffenbach’s passing was a critical factor.
Heisman Trophy contender Wayne Knight had limited space to make his usual impact, gaining only 29 all-purpose yards. Nonetheless, he achieved his 12th touchdown of the season.
Dieffenbach was prepared to face challenges and completed 22 of 33 passes, narrowly missing the career-best mark seen by Iamaleava. His efforts led to the second quarter’s first touchdown after connecting with Jalen Saint Paul for a 21-yard pass, setting up Knight’s one-yard touchdown carry.
The Bruins’ second touchdown capped Dieffenbach’s outstanding drive with two long passes, leading to Anthony Woods’ three-yard run, widening their lead to 10 points.
UCLA’s defense also played a significant role, limiting Wisconsin to 214 total yards and impressively restricting their passing game to 66 yards, even without starting cornerback Rodrick Pleasant. Wisconsin’s key receiver, Jaylon Domingeaux, finished with 26 yards.
Though Wisconsin’s quarterback Colton Joseph managed 71 rushing yards, the Bruins contained their opponents effectively, maintaining dominance on the defensive side. Jalen Woods’ timely sack resulted in a missed field goal by Wisconsin, ensuring a first-half shutout.
On offense, Dieffenbach faced only one interception during a second-quarter Hail Mary and encountered just one sack. The Bruins converted 13 of 20 third-down attempts, exhibiting their efficiency under pressure.
While UCLA didn’t force any takeaways despite two fumbles, their defensive presence was strong enough to make crucial stops, like preventing a Wisconsin comeback when they halted Darrion Dupree on a critical fourth-and-two play.
