Canadian officials have confirmed both fatalities and injuries following a significant incident that triggered a major fire at one of the country’s busiest military bases on Saturday. The incident occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, a key training site for the Army.
Defense Minister David McGuinty shared that the base experienced a tragic event, but he did not provide specific numbers on the casualties. He stated, “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base.”
The ongoing fire, as of Saturday evening, has also reached areas beyond the base’s boundaries, posing additional threats to the locality. Despite this, local authorities have not issued any evacuation orders yet.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences over the incident, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described it as a “significant and tragic fire” impacting military personnel at the site. Both leaders used social media to communicate their thoughts and concerns.
The response involves several organizations, including the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and local emergency services, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Additionally, McGuinty noted collaboration between multiple government entities to provide necessary support.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located about 130 miles east of Edmonton, had approximately 1,310 military and civilian personnel in 2021. The nearby town of Wainwright has a population of around 6,600.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation, and further information is forthcoming.
