The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of RAF Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia. The move aims to defend against attacks from the Iranian-backed Houthis, who have launched missile and drone strikes.
U.K. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting stated on Tuesday that the aircraft presence is strictly for defense purposes. The jets will not engage in offensive operations against the Houthis.
In addition to the aircraft, the U.K. is sending military advisers to provide strategic support. An RAF A400M transport aircraft will facilitate the movement of defense equipment within the kingdom.
This decision follows the Houthis’ claims of responsibility for two strikes targeting Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. These attacks, carried out on October 10 and 11, resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and left 308 others injured.
The Houthis are engaged in a civil conflict against Yemen’s internationally recognized government. This government receives support from Riyadh.
