For remote workers, a green status on Microsoft Teams is more than just a status update. On a Reddit discussion in the antiwork community, users shared methods to avoid appearing as ‘Away.’ Techniques included replaying meeting recordings, blaming VPN issues for going offline, and scheduling texts to seem active. These comments reveal a workplace challenge: when managers use presence indicators as productivity measures, employees may feel the need to manage these signals alongside their tasks.
One suggestion to replay meeting recordings gained 503 upvotes. Another user reported using VPN glitches to appear offline, stating no one bothered them afterwards. A reply to this suggested sending scheduled texts, saying, “Oh weird, the VPN must be bugging—here’s a text I sent at 7:25 a.m. (scheduled), I’m still working through this,” earning 97 upvotes. Skepticism was also present, as one user noted the meeting-recording trick never worked for them.
Mouse jiggler devices and scripts were discussed as well. A commenter described a separate device as invaluable for avoiding detection, receiving 205 upvotes. However, warnings were raised that IT staff might identify such devices. Users also shared lower-tech solutions, like claiming their mouse naturally moves to avoid idle status. For example, one user manually set Teams to ‘Away’ or ‘appear offline,’ claiming unchallenged success since their work was completed.
Another method involved using a PowerShell script to send and undo Scroll Lock inputs, though its effectiveness and detectability by employers were not confirmed. These narratives reflect broader frustrations with workplace monitoring. The original post author highlighted an ‘observation blitz’ where managers critiqued employees, feeling feedback generated by Copilot was ineffective.
Newsweek reviewed the post prior to deletion and contacted Microsoft for comments, as well as Ifeoma Ajunwa, a law professor, and employment attorney Sean P. Ryan.
Earlier strategies to keep a device active recall suggestions from 2022. A TikTok creator, Nate, shared a method to start a Teams meeting alone and change status to ‘Available,’ warning against overuse. Opinions varied; some found success while others criticized managers for Teams reliance. A commenter suggested holding down the spacebar with an object, tricking the computer into recognizing activity.
Microsoft clarifies that Teams presence is determined by user activity, app state, and calendar info. An idle user might see Teams change their status after a few minutes. Users can manually set their status, and an online setting allows a user’s status to remain ‘Available’ if they’re active on other tasks. Microsoft states this checks device activity without tracking specific tasks.
Administrative reports offer data on messages, calls, and meeting participation, along with user activity, but do not determine completed tasks. There is no indication Teams can identify specific devices or workarounds.
