In Edmonton, Alberta, supporters of the Forever Canadian group awaited the results of a crucial referendum regarding Alberta’s future. The vote, aimed at assessing the province’s desire to remain within Canada, showed early projections favoring unity. Preliminary data indicated that 76 percent of voters chose to stay with Canada, while about 23 percent voted for initiating a legal process toward a separation referendum.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised the results, stating, “Albertans chose Canada.” This vote occurred amid a trade conflict with the United States and threats from President Donald Trump concerning Canada’s status. Carney’s response emphasized Canadian nationalism, reflecting public support. Prior to the vote, Carney highlighted external forces seeking to disrupt Canadian unity.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also welcomed the decision and planned to address voters regarding future steps. In contrast, Keith Wilson, co-chair of the Let Alberta Decide group, remarked that the conversation about Alberta’s future would persist.
The referendum included nine additional questions, covering topics such as immigration. Official results are expected on Oct. 29.
