President Donald Trump expressed concerns over French immigration policies during an interview on “Sunday Morning Futures.” Trump’s remarks indicated that he warned French President Emmanuel Macron that these policies were “destroying France.” He emphasized that allowing individuals who oppose French culture into the country is detrimental to its national identity.
Trump pointed to issues not only in France but also in Spain and Italy, arguing that the border enforcement policies of his own administration had prevented such troubles in the United States. He stated, “The people that are causing the problems are people that hate Spain and hate France and hate Italy.” According to Trump, these individuals harbor disdain for art, architecture, and the overall cultural heritage of France.
Macron, on the other hand, proposed to ban protests organized by unauthorized groups, blaming “ultra-left groups” for the ongoing riots and looting in France. His statements followed the arrest of nearly 1,000 protesters as demonstrations continued across the nation. The unrest was not confined to France, with violence emerging in Rome and the Albanian capital of Tirana.
Protesters in France marched to express dissatisfaction with government policies. Demonstrations initially led by students over educational issues expanded with labor union involvement, encompassing broader grievances such as government austerity measures, wages, pensions, and living costs.
Addressing whether similar unrest could happen in the United States, Trump credited his administration’s border security efforts for averting such issues. “I think I stopped it. I closed the border,” he stated, highlighting a reported 95% drop in southwest border apprehensions and zero Border Patrol releases in the past fiscal year.
