Authorities in Cape Town, South Africa, are investigating the death of Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old soccer player who participated in the World Cup. His body was found at a property in Cape Town’s Schotsche Kloof neighborhood around 11 a.m. on Saturday. Police issued a statement indicating that the circumstances of his death are currently under investigation, but the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Adams was part of the South African team that achieved a historic milestone by reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time. He played in all three group stage matches but did not play in the round of 32 match against Canada.
His father, Juanito Adams, conveyed to South African TV station eNCA that the family is awaiting autopsy results and has not yet arranged funeral plans. He remarked on the difficulty of coping with his son’s untimely death and shared the family’s struggle to process the loss.
South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, highlighted Adams’ dedication by noting that he played against the Czech Republic shortly after receiving news of his grandmother’s death. McKenzie urged the public and media to refrain from speculating about Adams’ death while the investigation is ongoing.
The soccer community paid tribute to Adams with moments of silence during the England vs. Norway and Argentina vs. Switzerland quarterfinal matches on Saturday.
