Trump and UK’s New Prime Minister Discuss Key Issues

President Donald Trump recently spoke with Britain’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, shortly after his inauguration, describing the conversation as “very good.” Both leaders expressed their intention to meet in the near future to discuss matters of common interest.

During the discussion, Trump and Burnham addressed the enduring U.S.-U.K. relationship and the challenges Burnham faces at the beginning of his term. Trump conveyed American support for his British counterpart.

The Prime Minister has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it and, of course, the U.S.A. will be there to help!

The conversation included topics such as North Sea oil, trade, the military alliance, and efforts to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz. Burnham’s office released a statement emphasizing the prime minister’s eagerness to host Trump in Manchester during an upcoming visit.

Downing Street noted that Trump provided updates on Middle Eastern affairs, while Burnham reiterated the U.K.’s dedication to reopening the Strait of Hormuz safely for global supply chains. He stressed that defense and security would remain paramount for the U.K. and its allies.

On the home front, Burnham highlighted plans for reindustrialization to spur economic growth throughout the nation.

Trump described the call with Burnham as a success, stating:

Andy Burnham now holds the distinction of being Britain’s seventh prime minister in ten years, following his predecessor Keir Starmer, who served from 2024 to 2026. Despite past critiques between the two leaders, Trump once called Burnham “extremely liberal,” while Burnham openly criticized the American president.
