Trump Addresses Vandalism and Renovation Challenges at the Reflecting Pool

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that several individuals, including an Olympic canoeist, were arrested for allegedly vandalizing the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. These arrests come amid ongoing challenges faced by the administration’s $14 million renovation project. Trump made the announcement in posts on Truth Social, attributing the damage to vandalism without providing evidence. He suggested that the alleged acts could result in long prison sentences.

The Reflecting Pool, situated in front of the Lincoln Memorial, has encountered issues such as an algae bloom while being refilled after a new coat of sealant was applied. The blue sealant has started peeling, with pieces surfacing above the water. Trump met with contractors and remarked that extensive measures, including draining much of the water, might be necessary for repairs. In his second post, Trump called the vandalism a significant offense to the legacies of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

The President further alleged that vandals inflicted considerable damage by creating a 250-foot-long gash in the pool’s facade and pouring harmful chemicals into the water. The latest tear in the sealant was visible at the bottom of the pool.

“What these terrible Vandals have done is a true affront to both Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and should be dealt with accordingly,” Trump commented.

The renovation project aligns with a broader initiative to enhance Washington’s appearance in preparation for the United States’ 250th anniversary. Despite attempts to manage the algae, visitors continue to notice the bloom and peeling sealant. Among the onlookers was David “Davey” Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist, who claimed he was detained for several hours after touching the detached coating.

Hearn, aged 67, recounted visiting the pool to inspect the algae and peeling sealant. He stated his contact with the sealant did not alter its condition. Hearn expressed surprise over his arrest, noting that the national guardsman could not specify which law he had violated. The National Guard did not immediately provide a comment regarding the situation. Hearn was handcuffed abruptly, without clear communication of any charges.

Trump highlighted an article regarding Hearn’s arrest on social media. However, the U.S. Park Police have not offered additional information about any arrests made.

Amidst renovation efforts, Trump criticized previous administrations for the pool’s former state. He visited the site last month, promoting the ongoing repairs and promising an improved aesthetic. Workers were observed scrubbing algae from the pool on Friday as it again turned the water green.
