As we enter Week 3 of the 2026 NFL season, teams are beginning to define themselves, with some emerging as playoff contenders while others are struggling. Among the latter are the Los Angeles Chargers, according to future Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski.
During an event in New York City, Gronkowski expressed his views on the Chargers’ early performance. He stated, “The Los Angeles Chargers I would say are probably the biggest mess in the NFL in terms of how they’re playing and where they should be.”
“It’s not just one thing that’s going wrong. It’s a lot of things going wrong. The quarterback just not playing good ball, the offensive coordinator just not reading his team and not putting them in the right position.” – Rob Gronkowski
Head coach Jim Harbaugh, along with new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, leads a team that many expected to succeed. Yet, unexpected losses to the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders have left them with a 0-2 record.
The Chargers were anticipated to be competitive with McDaniel’s offensive strategy, but their current stats tell a different story. The team has averaged only 14 points per game, ranking as the third-lowest in the league. Their offensive yardage stands 23rd overall.
Quarterback Justin Herbert’s difficulties mirror those of the team. Having thrown just two touchdowns against three interceptions and completing only 59.3% of his passes, Herbert has struggled to establish momentum. The offensive line, previously a weak point, remains a concern.
Gronkowski emphasized the collective nature of the team’s struggles, stating, “It’s football. It’s such a team game that one player can’t make you collapse the way they’re collapsing. It’s everyone as a whole.”
Looking ahead, the Chargers face a challenging lineup of opponents, including the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens. Their upcoming schedule will test their ability to address existing issues and improve their performance.
As fans and analysts keep an eye on the Chargers, the pressure mounts for them to live up to pre-season expectations.
