Scandals and reality TV are often linked due to their drama, conflict, and shock value. Yet, beneath the surface, serious issues persist. Recently, Married at First Sight UK faced major allegations. Two former participants accused their on-screen husbands of rape, prompting the show to go off-air. This follows Disney’s decision to cancel The Bachelorette season after its star, Taylor Frankie Paul, faced abuse accusations.
For years, these shows have been scrutinized by journalists and academics. The sentiment is that reality TV has evolved, yet current allegations suggest otherwise. Dr. Kaitlyn Regehr, a social media expert and associate professor at University College London, told Newsweek that reality TV involves constructed performances intertwined with real lives, raising ethical concerns.
“The problem with constructed reality is kind of implicit in its name. How can something be both a constructed performance for entertainment but also intersect with the lives of real people without raising some serious ethical implications?”
Joanna Otero-Cruz, executive director and president of Women Against Abuse, emphasized the need for responsible storytelling. She pointed out that edited clips and incomplete information distort reality and can increase risks for survivors of domestic violence.
“Domestic violence is a complex and deeply personal issue. When media coverage or online commentary reduces situations to quick judgments or speculation, it can perpetuate harmful myths and even place blame on survivors.”
The Married At First Sight Rape Allegations
Married At First Sight UK halted its broadcast after allegations of rape by on-screen husbands surfaced. One woman reported threats of acid attack alongside her accusation of rape. Despite notifying Channel 4, the episodes aired. Another participant, Shona Manderson, accused her on-screen husband of misconduct, which he denied. Channel 4 has removed all episodes for an external review to assess contributor welfare.
Taylor Frankie Paul and The Bachelorette Cancellation
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star, Taylor Frankie Paul, faced legal issues that impacted her involvement in The Bachelorette. A leaked video showing her assaulting Dakota Mortensen ended her season before it aired. Both have faced abuse allegations and protective orders were issued. Disney suspended the show, aiming to support the involved families.
The Allegations Surrounding The Duggar Family
The Duggar family, once prominent on TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, has seen their public image tarnished by sexual misconduct allegations. In 2015, Josh Duggar was accused of molesting children and later convicted for child pornography, receiving a 12-year sentence. In 2026, Joseph Duggar faced molestation charges.
Love Island, Gaslighting and Coercive Control
Love Island has faced criticism for normalizing abusive relationships. Since 2018, domestic violence groups have raised concerns about contestant behavior. Ofcom received complaints about the UK franchise, spurring ITV to regularly address participant welfare but leaving questions about the show’s influence unresolved.
America’s Next Top Model Scandals, In Retrospect
Running from 2003 to 2018, America’s Next Top Model has a complicated legacy explored in Netflix’s documentary Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model. Incidents like Shandi Sullivan’s believed non-consensual encounter and Keenyah Hill’s alleged mistreatment highlight questions about harm and responsibility. The documentary reinforces current reality TV concerns.
Looking To The Future of Reality TV
Reality TV faces scandals that indicate the need for change. Professor Karen Boyle stressed recognizing problematic behavior early, involving audiences too. Regehr emphasized considering the impact on viewers, especially young ones. Otero-Cruz suggested industry reforms to prioritize participant well-being and address abusive dynamics responsibly.
“Media has enormous influence over how audiences understand relationships, and with that influence comes responsibility,” Otero-Cruz stated.
